You must create an account on the RCS website www.rcseng.ac.uk to register on our course. You will be allocated an RCS number which you must email to [email protected] within 3 days of your booking. Failure to provide a valid RCS number may result in your booking being cancelled at short notice.
What is BSS:
BSS is a two-day, hands-on programme designed to teach fundamental surgical techniques – including suturing, knot-tying, tissue handling and safe instrument use – to help early-career trainees build confidence and prepare for theatre and further surgical training.

Who should attend:
- Foundation doctors (FY1-FY3)
- Core surgical trainees (CT1 – CT2)
Learning outcomes:
- Demonstrate safe surgical practice for the patient, the surgeons and the surgical team
- Demonstrate the correct techniques for laying safe surgical knots and placing sutures
- Describe and demonstrate the principles of tissue handling and related techniques
- Describe and demonstrate the basic principles of safe endoscopic surgery.
