Human adaptation to altitude – comparing the Himalayas to Kilimanjaro
One of the many benefits of working across five different continents during my medical career has been to access and explore extreme altitude, along with human adaptation to it. My talk on Thursday will describe, compare, and contrast our ascent of Kilimanjaro in 2018 with that of climbing above Everest base camp earlier this year. The friends and students who accompanied me on each trip all agreed to share the objective measures of our physiological adaptation to ascending to almost 6000 m above sea level. I hope to illustrate the differences between our physiological adaptation to fast and slow ascents to this altitude with a few panoramic photographs to combine science with art!
