This engaging course offers a comprehensive exploration of key human factors, psychological safety, and civility, enhancing your non-technical skills and understanding of workplace dynamics, to support Patient Safety across UHT.

Theory and Foundations:

The day begins with an in-depth look at essential concepts:

The morning session will feature expert-led presentations, interactive discussions, and practical exercises that engage participants in applying theoretical knowledge to real-world situations.

  • Psychological Safety: Understand what psychological safety is and why it is crucial for effective teamwork, open communication and Patient Safety. Learn how to adopt an environment where individuals feel safe to speak up, share concerns, and collaborate without fear.
  • Civility in Healthcare: Explore the impact of respectful interactions on team effectiveness and patient safety. Recognise how civility helps build trust, reduces stress, and improves overall workplace culture.
  • Human Factors and Non-Technical Skills: Delve into human factors principles and how they relate to healthcare settings. Develop your understanding of non-technical skills such as leadership, communication, situational awareness, and decision-making. Learn how these skills contribute to Patient Safey, efficient, and cohesive team performance.

Practical Application:

In the afternoon, participants will watch pre-recorded videos featuring realistic scenarios involving multidisciplinary teams. These videos are tailored to reflect common challenges within various healthcare settings.

Interactive Discussions:

  • Work in groups to analyse and discuss the scenarios shown.
  • Reflect on the morning’s learning and see how it can be applied in practice.
  • Share insights and experiences with peers, reinforcing the concepts covered earlier in the day.

This format bridges theory and practice, providing participants with a clearer understanding of how psychological safety, civility, and human factors influence daily operations and patient care.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the day, participants will:

  • Gain a thorough understanding of psychological safety, civility, and human factors and their links to Patient Safety.
  • Identify strategies to promote a safe and respectful working environment.
