Overview:

In 1993, doctors Regi and Lalitha decided to set up the Tribal Health Initiative in the Sittlingi region, Tamil Nadu, India to combat the various social determinants that affected the health indicators.

After 30 years of persistence and working towards the universal goal of “Health for all”, there is now a secondary care hospital with some elements of tertiary care; an organic farming initiative which is currently the largest one in the State, an artisan-led association called “Porgai” working at the grassroots of women empowerment and economic upliftment, along with various other initiatives.

What started off as a small team and a hut as the clinic in 1993 is now a 35-bed hospital with 80 staff members, 3 operating tables, an ICU with ventilatory support, ultrasonography, endoscopy, a laboratory with all the basic facilities, a well-equipped generic-drug pharmacy, a neonatal high dependency unit, and a labour room that helps more than 800 women give birth in a year.

Despite a dedicated team working together in various fields, there are still issues and lacunae that need constant addressing and planning. Work is beginning on mental health issues, adolescent health, problems of alcoholism, plastic waste, and various other threats to the tribes living in this remote valley. We also face threats from various sources that undervalue our work and demoralise the people working in this area. For example, a crèche is required for the children of the staff working here. We currently have a modest setup with an area to play and some nutritious millet meals served, but the facility needs upgrading and improvement.
