This one-day masterclass provides participants with a broad knowledge and practical experience of the non-technical skills that have been demonstrated to be essential for safe patient care.

Key learning outcomes:

  • Understanding the underlying principles of non-technical skills that contribute to safe surgical care.
  • Differentiating between four major categories of non-technical skills: Situation Awareness, Decision Making, Team Communication, and Leadership.
  • Identifying and assessing surgical non-technical skills in a series of operative video simulations using the NOTSS taxonomy.
  • Discussing the importance of non-technical skills in improving performance and reducing adverse events in surgery.
  • Using the NOTSS taxonomy to observe, rate, and provide feedback on behaviours in the operating room.

These outcomes are crucial for enhancing individual and team performance in surgery, ultimately contributing to better patient outcomes
