Course Overview:

This reconstructive surgery course is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding and practical skills in various urological and general surgical reconstruction techniques. The course will cover both theoretical knowledge and practical application, likely through a combination of lectures, case discussions, and hands-on simulated surgical training in a wet lab setting

Course Summary:

The course will delve into the principles and techniques of:

  • Bladder Repair: after traumatic or iatrogenic injuries.
  • Clam Cystoplasty: will cover indications, contra-indications, surgical steps, and potential complications of Clam Ileocystoplasty.
  • Ureteric Reimplant: Different techniques for reimplantation will be discussed including indications, contraindications, complications and on-table decision making about appropriate surgical technique.
  • Ileal Conduit: indications, contraindications and complications
  • End-to-End Bowel Anastomosis: bowel handling, blood supply, and various anastomosis techniques to ensure a secure and leak-free connection.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the indications and contraindications for each reconstructive procedure covered (bladder repair, clam cystoplasty, ureteric reimplant, ileal conduit, and end-to-end bowel anastomosis).
  • Describe the anatomical considerations relevant to each surgical technique, including the bladder, ureters, small bowel, and their respective blood supplies.
  • Outline the step-by-step surgical technique for performing bladder repair, clam cystoplasty, ureteric reimplant, ileal conduit creation, and end-to-end bowel anastomosis.
  • Identify and manage potential intraoperative and postoperative complications associated with each reconstructive procedure.
  • Apply principles of tissue handling, haemostasis, and sterile technique in the context of reconstructive surgery.
  • Select appropriate surgical instruments and materials for each procedure.
  • Develop understanding of principles of practical skills in performing these reconstructive techniques
  • Critically evaluate patient cases to determine the most appropriate reconstructive approach.
  • Discuss the long-term outcomes and follow-up care for patients undergoing these reconstructive procedures.

Target audience suitable for the course

  • Late-stage urology trainees (ST5+) and consultant urologists seeking to master complex reconstructive techniques like bladder repair, cystoplasty, ureteric reimplant, and ileal conduit. The course is for those with existing surgical experience and a commitment to specialized reconstructive challenges.
